North by Northwest

When M and I were first together, one of our favorite dates was doing Tuesday night at the Avalon Theater. They do a “dinner and movie” special. You buy dinner at any of the downtown restaurants and you get 2 free admissions to their Tuesday night feature. It is often older movies or current hit on their second run.

M couldn’t remember ever seeing an Alfred Hitchcock movie so when North by Northwest was going to be a Tuesday night movie, we decided we needed to go and see it. North by Northwest is one of my favorite Alfred Hitchcock movies so seeing it on the big screen was a treat.

The weather that night was horrible. Tons of snow and extremely cold. We parked a little ways away so we had to clomp over some snow banks. We were caught up in the silliness of us coming out on such a cold snowy night that we laughed almost the whole way.

After seeing it, M was hooked on seeing more older movies. It then became a thing for us to watch old movies. Not just Alfred Hitchcock, but other classics such as Casablanca, The Maltese Falcon, Charade, 12 Angry Men, Roman Holiday, The Great Escape, Thomas Crown Affair, and so on.

A year ago yesterday, we not only watched North by Northwest, but we also watched To Catch a Thief after. Another Hitchcock movie.

M loved movies - old and new. Loved to sit, unplug, and get caught up in the story. Our movie watching went down some when we got hooked on board games, but last year when M was sick it became something we could do to escape reality. We watched lots and lots of movies.

I have so many good memories with movie watching over the years with M. Since M died, I have had some issues watching movies because it hurts too much right now.

I am thankful for that day last year we were able to snuggle on the couch, holding hands, and watching North by Northwest. I remember M turned to me and said, “lots of good memories with this one” as she smiled at me. So many good memories. ❤️
