First of the Month
Yesterday was the first of the month. I was up as it hit midnight and turned to the first of May. I whispered, “Happy Anniversary, baby.” See the first of EVERY month has meaning to me. Michaela was such an amazing person and I feel sad that not everyone got to witness the daily celebrations of life she showed me. Our yearly anniversary is February 1, 2003, but the first of EVERY single month for the 17 years we were together she said, “Happy Anniversary, baby.” M wanted to make sure we just acknowledged our relationship and the love we had for each other. We had difficult times, but we didn’t give up. We reached out to hold each other in good and bad times and ended our days with knowing we were going to be there for each other through it all.
We had our times of being caught up in the daily mundane grind of life where we took each other for granted, but the first of the month we woke up to specifically come back to remember the daily celebrations of our life TOGETHER.
Moments we celebrated:
Being able to have coffee together every day because we worked from home or together
Being able to take time to go take a drive after delivering work she had done
Being able to sit on our deck with a glass of wine to watch the sunset
Yelling “I need pie” and smiling and knowing what that means
Going to the gym together in the middle of the day just because we needed to get out of our heads
Creating our own unique dates such as poetry dates
Cuddling up on the couch to have a Star Wars or Harry Potter movie marathon
Stay up late and binge watching a show on Netflix we got hooked on
Hearing her laugh as she told the story of us being locked out of the house and pushing me up through a window while I was wearing a skirt and flashing the whole neighborhood
Having fits of laughter just saying the words “deer parts” (and I know somewhere the original audio of it is most likely saved because it made her laugh - and say, “yep that is my girl”)
Dancing in our living room or the middle of the grocery store or a parking lot
Singing to the top of our lung to Across the Universe sound track or Queen or endless other songs as we had a shared passion for music
Making silly faces and taking photos of them
Sword fights with pool noodles in Walmart
Making brunch together
Spending 6 hours talking and talking and talking as we traveled to a work gig
Waking up to holding each others hands even though we didn’t fall asleep that way
And hearing her singing, “Happy Anniversary, baby.”
It came from the song by the Little River Band. One of our early yearly anniversaries - she woke me up with a rose and singing the whole song.
I am was so damn lucky to have found my person and heard Happy Anniversary 204 times.
